Ryanair continues to be in the spotlight for its new rules.
Among the changes taking effect from May 2025 — later postponed to September or October 2025 — one of the most notable is the requirement to use a digital boarding pass, obtained through online check-in via the airline’s official app or website, and downloaded onto your mobile device.
In addition, the airline is paying more attention to the size of hand luggage, which must comply with the dimensions of 40x20x25 cm (equivalent to a small backpack). Now, there's another new development.
This new rule, not yet in effect, is called the “40-minute rule.”
Ryanair’s goal is to ensure faster and more efficient procedures for passengers.
To this end, the airline has decided to set a specific arrival time at the airport to prevent passengers from arriving late and slowing down the boarding process or delaying the flight's departure.
The regulation requires passengers to arrive at the airport at least 40 minutes before the flight's departure time.
This time frame has been chosen by the airline as the minimum necessary to complete security checks and handle any unforeseen events.
Although the measure has not yet been officially published on the Ryanair website, it has been designed to ensure punctuality and proper flight management.
According to some Irish news outlets, the airline has already sent an urgent notice to thousands of travelers regarding a possible error that could result in a hefty fine.
Passengers who arrive at the check-in counter less than 40 minutes before the flight departure may be charged a €100 fine per person.
With the new rule, Ryanair recommends arriving early, as the time required for check-in and security checks may increase, especially during peak travel periods. Passengers who arrive late risk being marked as a "no show" and may lose their flight.
The new policy applies to travelers who arrive at the airport with less than 40 minutes before departure. These passengers may face a significant fine of €100 per person.
The airline's goal is to prevent issues between the closing of the check-in desk and the start of boarding procedures. Late passengers may have their flight canceled without the possibility of a refund, with penalties of up to €120 depending on the country.
This rule follows the introduction of a €55 fee for airport check-in if not completed online via the Ryanair app or website. If check-in is not done at least two hours before departure, it can still be completed at the airport up to 40 minutes before take-off, but a service fee will apply.
To avoid fines, Ryanair recommends checking in online and arriving at the airport well in advance.
Only a few air travelers are aware of their rights, and many of them lack the legal understanding necessary to claim compensation for flight delays. Even if they are aware of their rights, the process of requesting compensation from airlines can be challenging.
