Certainly. Regardless of the passenger’s nationality, the regulation covers all travelers who either departed from any EU airport or arrived in the EU on an airline registered within the European Union.

Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004, if a passenger declines the alternative flight, accommodation, or provided food and beverages offered by the airline, the airline is not required to reimburse the tickets purchased by the passenger or cover any additional costs incurred due to refusing the airline’s assistance.

Nevertheless, the passenger can still pursue a flight compensation claim and seek a refund for the canceled flight.

Depending on the distance you were planning to travel, you can expect compensation ranging from €250 to €600.

If a passenger opts for an alternative flight in lieu of the canceled one, airlines can decrease the compensation by up to 50%, but only if the discrepancy between the intended arrival time and the actual arrival time at the destination is less than 3 hours.
